    Object-relational database systems have been receiving a great deal of attention in the media recently. They have been the subject of numerous articles and interviews in which database vendors talk at length about extending their relational engines to support a diverse range of data types. However, while some major database vendors have been widely advertising and promoting objectrelational extensions that are yet to come, IBM has already been shipping a number of these extensions. To quote a recent trade journal: "IBM sits quietly above the bickering din, delivering what many users and analysts say is today the most advanced 'universal' database in the form of DB2 Version 2."
